• Hello.

When I first installed wordpress on my site, an XML sitemap was automatically generated for me.

I installed an seo plugin called rank math and it override that sitemap. However, when I deactivated rankmath, I expected to get back the wordpress sitemap.

But the wp-sitemap.xml url redirects to my homepage. I can’t get it back. How do I get back the wordpress sitemap that was automatically generated?

Note, I don’t want to use an seo plugin to generate the sitemap because ever since I installed it, the full slugs of my articles changed to to just the category in the google search results page. Even though they say it doesn’t matter, I’ve personally seen some of my articles get deranked after the slug changed.

Appreciate any help I can get.

  • To get back the WordPress sitemap that was automatically generated, you can try the following steps:

    1. Login to your WordPress dashboard and go to Settings > Reading page.
    2. Scroll down to the Search Engine Visibility section and check the box next to “Discourage search engines from indexing this site.”
    3. Click on the Save Changes button to save the changes.
    4. Wait for a few minutes and then uncheck the box next to “Discourage search engines from indexing this site.”
    5. Click on the Save Changes button again to save the changes.
This should reset the WordPress sitemap, and you should be able to access it by going to the URL of your sitemap (e.g., https://www.yourwebsite.com/wp-sitemap.xml).
