How do I force SSL on the front end?

Hi,

I am just wondering what is the best practice for forcing SSL on the front end. The codex says to define force ssl in wp-config, and to not use a plugin to force ssl in admin dashboard.

so im just wondering if there is way to define force ssl on front end in a similar way or do i have to use a plugin for the front end?
