how do i display top level pages

    i want to display top level pages on my blog to avoid cluster but i cant get it done.the fact is that many of the codes i came across online especially in WordPress forum do not state how to locate the file that am going to edit, where exactly to paste the code in the file. some suggest that i edit wp list page, but i cannot locate it in my WordPress editor. Please can somebody help me out on the step to step on how to go about it I am confused. my blog is and I use twenty ten theme
