    Access your dashboard go to appearance > widget
    then look for footer section then you can simply add your element there.

    Thanks for that. That allowed me to add some text to a footer, but it seems to only span half the width, which looks odd.

    More to the point, what I actually want to do is replace the text that’s in the black bar at the very bottom, where it says “Proudly powered by WordPress…” I don’t want to advertise WordPress or anyone else on my website.

    I’m guessing this will probably require a child theme and change to code in a file. I’m comfortable doing that, I just don’t know where to do it.
