How do I create audio buttons from images?

I am desperately trying to make audio buttons out of custom images. Ideally, I’d like the end result to be that when a visitor clicks on the image (or “button”), the audio immediately plays, then pauses when the visitor clicks the same image again. I really don’t want the click to take the visitor to a different page, or for something weird to come up when clicked. I just want start/stop of audio when the image is clicked.

I’ve looked at plugins, and they all seem to have independent buttons, which wouldn’t serve my purpose. Can someone offer a newbie any advice?
