How do I change my entire sites domain name on a shared hosting plan?

    I have been trying to figure out this issue for days now by reading through posts here and on Google with no resolve. I am building a site right now that I want to use a different domain name with. Here is where I am at so far

    1. My hosting is through godaddy.
    2. I have a wordpress site that I am building in one of my sub directories on a SHARED hosting plan.
    3. The site has its own database.

    Right now the url as an example is

    https://www.example.com/xx/xxxx

    which is pointing to the directory that my wp core files are in.

    What I want to do is use a different domain name that I own and change the url on the site to match. The problem I keep having is the index page will change but then every other page is the directory url.

    So right now for example the sites url for the directory is:

    https://www.example.com/xx/xxxx for the index page.

    I want to change it to the new domain but keep the site in the same directory. Simply pointing the domain at the site only changes the index or home page. I need the domain name to change on every page. So the index page would be:

    https://www.mysite.com

    About page

    https://www.mysite.com/about

    Blog page

    https://www.mysite.com/page2

    Can someone please point me in the right direction or give the fix to me. I do not want to move the site. I just want the url to change for the entire site.

  • Do you have cpanel access? It has a domain add on tool that you can point to a sub directory, then you can register that new domain name and point its name servers at your original site.

    So, for example, you have originalsite.com which has WordPress installed at originalsite.com/wordpress. But, using an addon domain to point at originalsite.com/wordpress, you can call it whatever you want but it will really just use that directory. So, newsite.com is actually originalsite.com/wordpress but displays as newsite.com.

    I’m not sure how to do without command line or cpanel, you might want to call godaddy if you’re just using their tools.

    No I dont have cpanel or yes this would be a much easier fix. I am trying here first if no one knows how to do this on here I would be amazed and baffled. There has to be others like me who want to build a site live so they dont have to deal with transferring it from LAMP or WAMP. There is more then likely someone on here who has done this before. I am also going to make a how-to video if someone can point me in the right direction because I see a lot of other people asking the same question.

    I would call godaddy, I’m sure they can walk you through the steps using the tools they’ve set up. I don’t have a current hosting account with them or I’d look into it for you.

    Yeah if no one on here can tell me how. I will still end up giving the answer from godaddy after calling them. I know people would be curious as to how to make this happen thank you though Andrew for your prompt response.

    Yea I mean I can walk you through it on cpanel but godaddy provides their own tools that duplicate the functionality. Best of luck, let us know how it goes.
