How do I change between excepts and full in categories?

Before you say it, ive looked here

under heading Modifying How Posts are DisplayedI cannot find
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
or
<?php the_content(); ?>in the php file archive.php, which is what my categories pages uses
I can post the code on request.Any help or ideas welcome
