How do I add Webmaster meta tag to home page?

  • I cannot find where the html is for my home page and I want to add the google meta tag to verify my site. All instructions say there is an option under “Tools” but in my “Tools” there is only Press This and Categories and Tags Converter. I think, therefore, that I need the root of the home page and don’t know how to get there! Can someone please help? (You can tell I’m a newbie!!)

  • you would usually add this to the <head> section of header.php of your theme

    Thanks for your reply!
    I have an image as a custom header in my theme so that’s the only option to add when I open “Header” under “Appearance” tab.
    I think I need to see the whole of the page in html don’t I, so that I can place meta tag between <head> and the first <body>? If it’s any help I’m using Twenty Ten as my theme but I have changed the image – that’s all.

    you have to go to ‘appearance’ ‘editor’ and then select ‘Header’ (header.php) as the template that you want to edit.

    Oh, right I’ve found that header.php in the list on the right. I’ve put the meta tag on the line after <head>. Haven’t much idea about website programming but will see if this works now. Watch this space!

    I have the Lifestyle Widget-ready child theme created for the Genesis Theme Framework. When going to ‘appearance’ ‘editor’ there is not available the ‘header.php’ for selection on the right hand side. I, also, need to add the Webmaster meta tag to my Home page. Where would I find this in WP-Admin to add the ‘google site-verification’ meta-tag to my website?
