How do i add 4 widget areas on my home page?

Ok, working on a site for somebody, and they want to be able to post 4 ‘featured products’ at the top of the home page (a 2 x 2 table style layout)
how do i add 4 widget areas to the home page? or should i just use a table?
I’m using a static home page, if that makes a difference
the theme is one i’ve created using Artisteer – though that shouldn’t make much difference – i understand how to add a single widget area, but can’t figure out how to make a ‘grid’ of widget areas
hope someone can help – my head hurts!!
