How commissions work, and cookies

How does the generated affiliate link work? the affiliate link that is generated at the time the user creates the account, with that link, if someone accesses, will fall on the homepage, until then so good, but if the person buys some product from the store that is on other pages, he will receive the commission? Is there any way I can test this? And another question, where can I change the days of the cookies?
