how can you check if your rss feed really is being distributed?

the way i understand it, when you add services to your ping list, those services will be automatically notified of updates to your blog. is that right? is that done through the rss feed? and how do i check to make sure it really is working? any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thank you.
