• Hello all,

we would like to know what the best way is to go about migrating our wordpress site which has woocommerce on it, to a new domain. Both domains are with the same host (bluehost).

We have gone to bluehost for advice and they have been as useful as a chocolate fire-guard! We have also tried searching for answers on the net, and there appears to be 1000s of different ways to do this, each of which seem to require a degree in rocket science!!

We are looking for the simplest method to migrate the site which will cause as few problems as possible. As you can already probably tell, I am not the most technical of people so please explain in laymens terms!!

Thanks for your help in advance.

  • I do not know whether woocommerce complicates things, but cPanel is where domains get assigned and pointed at BlueHost. So, and after knowing which domain is a BlueHost Primary Domain and which is a BlueHost Add-On Domain, that is where I would begin figuring out the simplest way to do things.

I havent used woocommerce but it shouldnt matter. Ill give u a quick overview.

To migrate/move any website first export the wordpress files (just everything in the root, where the config.php file is) and export the database using phpMyAdmin to a .sql file. You might not have to export the db since it is with the same host, you can just update it (see following).

Now if u exported the db you need to create a new database (usually do this in the cPanel) then import the db that you just exported into the new db.

Once the new db has been imported or you had just left the old db where it was (good idea to export it so you have a bk up) u need to update all the old links, replacing the old domain with the new one.

Then upload the sites files to the new domain. If you created a new db you will need to update the config.php file with the new db details.

Once done login to the new website dashboard and go to Permalinks ans click save, this will update the .htaccess file.

Hope that points u in the right direction.

ok thanks I’ll have a look.

Do you know what the export function is for in the actually wordpress dashboard (beneath “tools”)? We were hoping we could export from our existing site, setup a new wordpress on our new site, and then import these files – would this work?

    thanks

Ummm no i cant remeber seeing that maybe it is a plugin you have… give it a shot maybe and see what it does cant hurt ??

That will only export pages and posts, not you entire database which *is* your site. And then, of course, your /wp-content/ folder is yet another piece.
