how can I set post_thumbnails automatically?

Hi,

I’m researching the possibility of creating a plugin that would enable mass creation of posts with associated images. Is there any function that works like set_post_thumbnail() would, if it existed? If there is no such function, can anyone point me to where I should start digging to create my own?
