How can I put other things in the flexslider?

I’d like to re-do the front page a bit, so that I could place div rectangles (the same as there are already div rectangles for post-images-and-exceprts, but I’d put a list of posts from a particular category inside instead. How can I make use of the existing flex-slider sizing css and put my own stuff inside the boxes/columns?
