How can I prevent my theme from being stolen or copied?

  • I tried looking in the forum but didn’t find a question addressing this specifically.

    I am a designer, I’m relatively new to WordPress, and I have been buying themes for my clients so far. I understand that you can only use every theme for a single project unless an extended license is bought with it. I am currently working on my own theme and I plan to hopefully make more in the future and be able to sell them online.

    My question is how can one detect/track websites that use my theme and be able to see that their theme version is genuine (not stolen or copied soemwhere online). Is there a way around this? Can I embed something in my theme files? Is there some system that deals with this sort of thing or are users left to use themes as they wish?

    Any help on this is greatly appreciated as I really dont get it and I cant find a resource online that addresses this. Help!

    I understand that you can only use every theme for a single project unless an extended license is bought with it.

    Any such theme (and whoever sells it) is not in keeping with the GPL or WP policy and philosophy and is not supported or welcome here.

    There are other licensing or copyright options out there, but these forums really aren’t the place to ask about them.

    In general, anyone can copy your CSS code and/or much of your other code simply by viewing the source of your pages – there’s not a lot you can do to prevent that. And even if you find people who’ve copied it, you’d need to take legal action against them which is extremely expensive.
