    Hi

    I’m trying to figure out how to do this project of mine.

    I’m building a site for an authors work, there’s around 1.200 magazines and letters that needs to be registered. Both of them are filled with articles of different kind.

    I need to have an image of the front cover, a list of what articles that are in this issue and i need to be able to search through the article titles – a user must be able to search for a specific title. Then i need to have a short description field, one for the content of the issue, just an overview and one for historical notes. I also need some category tags that can group articles together.

    Everything needs to be searchable and the single issue needs to have its own page for display, and the user should be able to flip to the next magazine via links.

    Regarding the search, the list presented needs to hold links to the articles found, also if it’s a category that turns op in the search.

    Further down the road, i would like to put the magazines and letters online for reading, and then when searching, i would like to have it so, that when the user clicks the link to the article, the sentence searched for, is marked in the article/text.

    I have bin looking at Pods, but it kind a looks like overkill, but i’m not the right one to judge this. I have only used WP as is, i have designed layouts and themes, but never had anything to do with how WP works with post and fields, and how things are done the best and easiest way.

    So what is the best and easiest way to make the project come alive ?

    What you are describing sounds like a use case for custom post types, and Pods will help you do that. There are some other plugins that do this too. Pods is very robust, so it might seem like “overkill”, but depending on your skill level, it can be very helpful.

    You will probably need to know a little HTML/CSS (and depending on how you want to lay out your templates, perhaps a little PHP), to really make this work. Or find a developer to help you with it.

    I think the worst problem about Pods, is the missing documentation and tutorials, it’s not easy to figure out.

    So i searched a bit, and found Types and Views, it is so well documented and a lot of tutorials and guides.

    I found a great tutorial by Neil Curtis on Youtube, called TurboBike.

    And as you write, Custom Post Types will do the trick, it’s clear to me now after watching videos and reading about the Types plugin.

Sorry we couldn’t be the solution for you, but glad you found something that did work. Live chat support isn’t something most free plugin developers offer, even Types and Views don’t have it.

    Hi Scott

    It’s not to make you or your product look bad, it’s just not that easy to figure out how it works.

    And regarding that and documentation and tutorials, take a look at how Types have done it. I know it’s a matter of man hours, but this i the direction you need to work in, if you want Pods spread out to more users.

    I have bin a geek since 1995, and i have seen how this world has developed, and i have seen how less user know about coding, and also a drop in the interest in it – so it needs to be better explained and easier to go to.

    And last, i don’t doubt that Pods is great, i can read on many sites, but i can’t use it if there isn’t any one or thing that tells me how it works.

    And yes, Custom Post Types are awesome!

    I think there is an aspect of the more features/options/flexibility something has, the more complicated it can seem to us when we try to get started. Scott, I too am glad to hear you have more docs & tutorials, and VERY glad to hear about community chat!
