Thank you for your help but what I want is for certain user roles to appear more prominently in member lists. It can be a fluffy and shadowy appearance.

I can recommend you one way. You could add additional user role to users and add some CSS code after that:

.um-members .um-member.um-role-YOUR_ROLE_NAME {
   /*some code*/
}
