how can I make one of the pages I created my home page?

I wonder if anybody could tell me how to make one of the pages I created my ‘home’ page – the first page you see when you visit the site.

I custom made my own menu in wordpress and changed the pre-set word ‘home’ to ‘start’. When you click on the ‘start’ button you go to the correct page but when you go to the URL a different page appears (that has the theme’s pre-set blog look) Also when you click on the logo you come to this ‘home’ page.

I used to code html and then of course you just name the home page index.html but of course here in wordpress it works completely different (I’m only beginning to get the hang of it) So… how do you make my ‘start’ page the index/home page in wordpress?
