In trying to solve the 500 Server error problem (still unresolved) I stupidly made changes in my settings. I can now no longer access my dashboard via my site or via wordpress…does any one have any methodology of getting to a dashboard via a ‘bust web page’ https://cornishsmugglers.com – funnily enough all I get now is the ‘server error page’

  • Server 500 errors can be pretty obscure.

Looks like you still have cpanel login, can you get in there? If yes, check the error logs to see if you can get something more specific.

If you have not already, it’s probably time to bring in your hosts tech support. It looks to me like your domain is not resolving on any page but index, that may be a mis-configuration they can help you with.

Thanks for that – I cant get to my C panel log in(but I suspect I know why – I stupidly toyed with the URL in settings) – and having modified the .htaccess file name via FTP – of course I need to get into my c. panel to create a new one. Have you any idea where the url data resides so that I can get to it through my FTP and change it back to what it should be??? I may then be able to access my c panel /permalinks create a new htaccess code and get it working….

    Many thanks

If you just changed the name of .htaccess, can’t you change it back? You don’t need cpanel to create .htaccess, it is just a text file, you could make one in Notepad

Hi, in the past when iv been playing with some settings and i get a server 500 internal error, i just delete the .htaccess file and everything seems to work again. I then reverse the settings and then get WordPress to re-write a new .htacess file with the new settings.

to get WordPress to re-write a .htaccess file: go to WordPress permalinks settings page and change it to the default setting and click save and then change it back to your desired setting, doing this prompts WordPress to re-write the .htaccess file.

Sorry i realised my link didn’t have a closing a href tag. the link in my previous comment should be there now.
