    Hi

I am new to all this and wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction please?

I am used to building simple sites using Microsoft Expression Web (and use code view a lot) so I have an understanding of HTML and CSS but trying to get my head around WordPress is a little different.

I would like to build a site with WordPress that looks more like a ‘normal’ site as opposed to a blog – but with the functionality that WordPress offers.

I have found a site I really like because it is really simple and clear but am a little confused as to how I would customise a few things when using WordPress e.g.

    1) How would I add image links to the left sidebar (the little paw prints that say ‘home’ and visit our store’ etc).

    2) How would I separate the various things up so they are not all in the same sidebar e.g. having ‘archives’ in one and ‘recent posts’ in another?

    3) Can I change the names of the various things like changing the name ‘blogroll’ to ‘links’ etc?

    4) Have they added static pages?

I am supposing it is something to do with the sidebar php pages or adding plugins etc but not sure where to actaully start.

Apologies for such a long email with more than one question but I’m sure I’m pointed in the right direction I’ll ‘get it’

The site I like the look of is, https://dawndowsett.typepad.com/norfolk_for_dogs/welcome_norfolk_for_dogs.html/

Thanks very much for nayones help in advance.

You will be able to achieve a look like the site you like. First thing you do, is to select a widget ready theme with two sidebars that is similar in layout, then you can customize the colors and header through css.

    To answer your questions:

1 – You can add image links to the sidebar with text widgets. You just add the HTML code there. There is also a plugin called “Simple Image Link” that works fine.

2 – You can put the widgets wherever you want in the sidebars. From your Admin Dashboard, you go to Appearance –> Widgets and start placing them either in sidebar 1, or sidebar 2

3 – Yes, you can. From the same widgets panel, you click on a widget to edit it, and change the title.

4 – Yes, they have a static front page, which you can do with WordPress, and then have the blog part on a blog page. You can also create several static pages, as needed.

WordPress is great and highly configurable.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks Buddha Trance that’s very helpful.

I see now that the site I sent the link to was created in Typepad, so I’m sure anything they can do WordPress can do ??

Getting your head around a new concept is hard if you are ‘programmed’ to do things in a different way.
