How can I get my site looking like this. *new to WordPress*

There are lots of themes that will give you a site that looks somewhat like that. But what are the specific features of that setup that you like?

I like it as a whole really, the news items on the left middle and things like polls and a calendar on the right middle are all I really need.

Those are most likely plugins and widgets. I would find a theme you like and install it, and then start browsing through the pugins and widgets. There’s nothing like customizing a theme to teach you how it all works.

also you might look into k2 https://getk2.com/, it worked like a champ up until 2.5 but I’m sure they’ll work the bugs out.

You may want to take a look at Brian Gardner’s “Revolution” theme at https://www.revolutiontheme.com/ There are multiple variations available, and Brian is fantastic to work with.
