How can I edit the theme?

I just downloaded a theme and I can’t seem to use the theme editor.
I’ve been following the instructions on the codex about chmod, file p[ermissions everything but it’s not working.

I’m not that technical so I’m having a bit of a hard time.

So, how can I make the theme editor work?
