How can I create a poor man’s private products?

I have a small shop and expect that I will have sporadic private orders from clients that are outside the overall product catalog and will be one-offs for the particular clients.

I’m trying to figure out if there is some way to create / provide these private orders for them to purchase once defined. There aren’t enough of them to warrant investing in a dedicated plugin.

Current thought is to create a “custom order” product category and not show that category in the general catalog. Then send a direct link to the product page after it is published, for the client to complete the purchase.

Any thoughts on how I could accomplish that (filtering the categories on the public page) and / or any other approaches that might be easier / better?
