How can I allow "-" sign in the SKU?

The client is an international company who has “-” sign in all their SKU’s and they cannot be changed.
Trying to created a product with sku for example: 123556-abcssg
results in a “SKU must be unique” error. Removing the “-” solves the problem but isn’t acceptable for the client.
