Hover effects and collapse

You can absolutely use hover effects. It would be some combination of https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/sel_hover.asp and https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_background-image.asp. So likely it would look like:

.my-custom-element:hover {
 background-image: url("hover.png");
}

.my-custom-element {
 background-image: url("no-hover.png");
}
