Hostname automatically appears twice; can't upgrade

  • I’m using 2.x and want to upgrade to 3.0.4

    My hostname is subdomain.domain.com

    but when I enter it along with the user name and password, I get the following:

    Error: There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.

    and in the hostname field it says:

    subdomain.domain.com://subdomain.domain.com

    I.e., the hostname is being added to itself automatically and I can’t upgrade.

    If I enter “bob” as the hostname then the field will appear as
    bob://subdomain.domain.com

    I deleted cookies/history etc. from Internet Explorer. I ran CCleaner to get rid of any stuff, yet when I go back to the upgrade page it insists that the host name is
    subdomain.domain.com://subdomain.domain.com

    You’ve hit a bug that was in a early version of WordPress, You’ll need to enter your hostname as ‘subdomain.domain.com:21’ in the FTP Credentials.

    This happens when someone attempts to use ‘ftp://hostname/’ as the FTP address in early versions of WordPress, it assumes ‘ftp’ as the hostname and ‘//hostname/’ as the port (Which will obviously fail). Entering it as ‘hostname:21’ rests the port back to the FTP default of 21.

    Thanks all for replying.

    Unfortunately none of these solutions have worked and my web host says I should go the manual update route which is not very appealing.

    Can you FTP files? Then yes, you can do a manual update ??

    This is what I entered:
    Hostname: subdomain.domain.com
    Username: subdomain.domain.com
    Pwd:

    Result:

    Pink box at the top of the screen: Error: There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.

    Next line: To perform the requested action, connection information is required.

    Hostname and username are filled in though hostname now appears as subdomain.domain.com:21

    I enter my password again and get the same message.
