Hosting/Ownership transference

  • My friend and I own the domain name for our website but the hosting was set up by a web design company that is seemingly going under. Is there a way I can trasfer the ownership to the hosting so I don’t have to start from scratch once the original designer’s company completely goes under?

  • You need to get in touch with the registrar who holds your domain name.

    And FTP your files off the host if you haven’t done so already!

    You don’t really want to transfer ownership to the hosting company do you? Or did I read your problem wrong?

    One more tip:

    If you decide to switch hosts too, and receive mail through your domain (e.g., [email protected]), go ahead into your cPanel (or whatever admin screen you have) and route all your domain mail to a throwaway address. When you secure possession of your domain and point its nameservers elsewhere, set up your domain mail there. Once the old nameservers cease working, no more mail will come to your throwaway address. Then you’re set to go.

    The domain is not in the name of any company. It is owned by a certain Robert S. from Middlesex. Is that you, ematland? (or your friend?)

    Yes, Robert S is my friend… I’m just trying to figure out the easiet way to make sure we will stay online once entity that was doing the hosting looses all its money (just a matter of time now)… Thank you for your return posts. I will sort this out in the morning when I am of sound mind

    Legally you own the domain name and your host shall give you full access to it. In case they don’t, you just need to transfer the domain name to the registrar of your choice.
