• Ive purchased a domain, got my page started, now am looking to get it online. Was looking at:
    https://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml
    for service.
It shows Linux webhosting & Windows webhosting. Im running WordPress using MAMP on my MacBook. Will I have any troubles uploading it? Should I select Linux hosting, or do I need to get a Mac specific host?
Also, will a Shared plan be sufficient to run a review blog?

  • I do the reverse a lot of the time – I host on a PowerMac but I do a lot of fiddling-around on a Linux box. I copy the WordPress install back and forth without any trouble.

You <i>might</i> have to make a tiny change to your wp-config.php, as per the Warker instructions (step 13). More than likely, you changed it for MAMP and have to change it back now.

I’m not 100% familiar with how hard they stack the boxes at Hostgator, but a shared plan is probably enough for the immediate future, and then some. I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to help you with migration if you grow big enough to need a dedicated box.

    >Should I select Linux hosting

Yes. Linux is a very common OS for servers. Windows OS is way more common than Mac OS. Some people use Windows servers so that they can use FrontPage extensions. There is no point of your getting Mac OS server unless you need to run Mac applications online.

    >Shared plan be sufficient to run a review blog?

    Yes.

In case you need to know, we do use Mac OS, and our shared server uses Linux.

    Okay sounds good!
This will be my first site so its a bit of a learning curve…
How do I go about uploading the site? Is there a certain file directory that needs to go? Or do I just copy the whole WP file so that it can run online?
Ive got the feeling its got somethign to do with mySQL, but im not sure what…

    Sorry, one more…
What about synching the site online & the one on my computer?

WordPress is blog software. It’ll let you write an online diary. After installing WP, all you do is access your blog with an Internet browser to write articles. Of course, you can embed graphics, though.

Building a website is a totally different story. Basically, create a folder and build a website inside it. There are popular web applications like Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe GoLive and MS FrontPage (Windows only) that will let you write HTML with ease. You can review it with a web browser. When finished, upload all files and folders into your server through FTP.

You don’t have to touch your MySQL databases.
