Hi there, l’m trying to suss out which payment plugins for WooCommerce involve the customer being redirected to the Gateway’s own servers? What’s the official term for that type of payment plugin?

Also, could anybody explain why people don’t just stick to WooCommerce’s own PayPal plugin, why do they try other PayPal plugins besides that?

    Hi @woowoo101

which payment plugins for WooCommerce involve the customer being redirected to the Gateway’s own servers?

I believe you’re referring to what we call off-site payment gateways. You can find some options here:
    https://woocommerce.com/product-category/woocommerce-extensions/payment-gateways/off-site-payment-gateways/

Also, could anybody explain why people don’t just stick to WooCommerce’s own PayPal plugin, why do they try other PayPal plugins besides that?

Various plugins/methods have various different options. One example would be like you referred to above; some plugins do keep the customer on your site, while others send them off-site. For Paypal specifically, there are quite a few options; Paypal itself has different methods (Paypal Credit, Paypal Pro, etc.) so there are various Paypal plugins available that all work a little differently.

    Hi there Senff, nice name.

OK thanks for explaining that the term is “off-site”. I did notice that was a category of payment plugin but l wasn’t sure if l understood it right.

    Oustanding questions:
    – List of off-site payment plugins? Conclusion: https://woocommerce.com/product-category/woocommerce-extensions/payment-gateways/off-site-payment-gateways/

    – Why do people even bother with direct / onsite payment plugins? Surely it’s a no-brainer that off-site is best? But l see some plugins where the free version is offsite but the paid version is actually direct / onsite. I don’t understand why people would opt for direct / onsite. What am l missing?

    – Generally speaking, without going into detail, why the vast array of different PayPal plugins? What are the basic differences?

    – Finally: Generally speaking, why might a person want a £79 payment plugin, rather than a free payment plugin? I’m guessing things like: uptime, enhanced security features (but gosh, does that mean the free ones aren’t very secure???)

Why do people even bother with direct / onsite payment plugins?

In some countries/areas, certain payment methods are preferred and those might only be available as off-site versions. Sometimes people just want to offer different options to their customers, as well.

why the vast array of different PayPal plugins?

Paypal itself has various methods of payment, so the various plugins also reflect that, for starters. Each plugin has various options and how it works and looks.

Generally speaking, why might a person want a £79 payment plugin, rather than a free payment plugin?

The main advantage of paid plugins is getting support. You can use any of the free plugins out there, but you’ll be on your own if you have any problems setting it up or configuring it. With paid plugins, you are entitled to get support if something is not working the way you expect.
