Hooks in Action Scheduler keep getting stuck

    Hi,

    I have six regular Hooks that run in Action Scheduler. At least once a day one of them gets stuck (sometimes in “in-progress” and other times it just says “Action Scheduler migration in progress. The list of scheduled actions may be incomplete.” and “Maximum simultaneous queues already in progress (1 queue). No additional queues will begin processing until the current queues are complete.”

    If the hook gets stuck in in-progress I have to delete it and then deactivate and reactivate my main theme plug in.

    The author of the theme has troubleshooted for me but is unable to replicate this issues and can’t offer further support.

    I’ve searched this forum for similar issues but the troubleshooting steps have not worked for me.

    I have screenshots of Action Scheduler and have downloaded the system report from there.

    Please could you have a look and advise on next steps for me.

    Sorry for the late reply!

    From what I gather and can see in the screenshot, the problem is coming from either the HivePress theme or one of the HivePress plugins you’re using. Therefore, we’re really limited in the amount of support we can provide here. I can see you’re running an outdated version of WooCommerce so please try updating.

    If that didn’t help, then your next best option to identify the problem is to conduct a full conflict test by:

    • Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
    • Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
    • Repeat the action that is causing the problem

    If you’re not comfortable doing all of this on the live version of your site, you can create a staging environment using WP-STAGING.

    If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

    Hooks in Action Scheduler keep getting stuck

    I’ve contacted the theme support and they’ve tested and are adamant it’s nothing to do with them.

    I’d recommend temporarily deactivating Cloudflare on your site, with the “Pause Cloudflare on Site” option found in the “Advanced Actions” section of their control panel.

    Furthermore, make sure all server-side caching is disabled, and cleared.

    Then, try running the actions for those hooks again. It is a good idea to activate WP Crontrol: by John Blackbourn & crontributors again, before doing so (it is currently in the deactivated plugin list).

    Hi Pepe, thanks for your reply.

    Before you posted this I deleted an IP block I’d set up in Cloudflare (to prevent spam user registrations I was getting on my site).

    Since I did this the hooks have been running as normal. It’s only a few days now but that’s longer than I’ve had in months. No idea if this is a permanent fix though – would you expect something like this to “unblock” the hooks?

    If I get a repeat I will follow through on the instructions you’ve highlighted above.

    Hello @laconicsky,

    I noticed your server’s PHP Time Limit is currently set a little low at 120, which might be causing some of the issues you’re experiencing. The PHP Time Limit is essentially a stopwatch for PHP scripts. If a script takes longer than the set time to run, PHP will halt the script and throw an error.

    Try bumping to at least 900, your hosting provider should be able to help you with this.

    Once you’ve done that, go ahead and run the pending actions manually.

    Hi, my provider (Hostinger) doesn’t allow you to amend this time frame unless you’re on their VPN plan (which I don’t really want to have to change to).

    My apologies for the late reply, we’re experiencing a high volume of tickets recently across all products we support.

    The PHP time limit is crucial when it comes to action scheduler related issues.

    To figure out if it’s the root cause of your problem, I recommend cloning your site to a local staging environment and let it run for a few days. I personally prefer using WPLocal, but you’re welcome to use any platform you’re comfortable with.

    If the issue doesn’t show up on the cloned site, then upgrading your plan is definitely worth it.

    Alternatively, you might want to check out WooExpress.

    WooExpress is our official hosting solution, not a separate e-commerce platform, sorry if I wasn’t clear. :?)

    I suggested WooExpress because, as I understand it, your current hosting provider doesn’t let you change the PHP time limit of your server.

    It’s generally not recommended to delete them unless you’re certain they’re not needed. Deleting a task could disrupt the functionality of your website if it’s something important. So, instead deleting, you can select them and immediately run to execute the events.

    However, if you identify a task that’s related to a plugin you’ve uninstalled, or something you’re sure you don’t need, you can safely delete it.

    Remember, making changes to the WP-Cron tasks should be done with care. If you’re unsure about something, it’s better to ask your hosting provider or hire an expert developer.
