Hooking into Groups

I modified the Groups plugin to customize how restriction is handled. For instance, on the post page I output the excerpt followed by a stylized message to sign up or login.
I want to avoid modifying the Groups plugin and instead hook into it to override some methods. I’m pretty new to plugin development, so I’m not sure where to start.
I see the API, but not sure how to use it to accomplish what I want:
