    Hi,

I am constantly getting spam through the contact form, which I′m 100% sure are bots. It′s a problem I′ve just been putting up with, as I can just delete the messages, but it′s a little bit annoying deleting probably a hundred or more spam messages a week.

I only have the basic free version of WPForms. I′ve noticed that there is a “Hidden Field” option for the Premium version (i.e. paid version). Does this mean there is no Honeypot for the free version? (I can see no option in settings anywhere, so imagine this option has been removed at some point in the past?).

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Adam

I have just noticed that there is an option for “Enable Anti-Spam Protection” I previously had not enabled on the form itself, which I have literally just enabled. I will see if this makes any difference, but the Honeypot option enabled clearly has not been working. Do you have any suggestions and how does the Anti-Spam protection work?

    P.S. Thanks in advance.

    Hi @adamno1,

Sorry to hear that you’ve received spam!

We also have integration with Google’s free reCAPTCHA service. In case it helps, here’s a detailed tutorial on how to set up reCAPTCHA in WPForms.

And if you’d prefer not to use reCAPTCHA, you can consider the third-party plugins such as WordPress Zero Spam or Spam protection, AntiSpam, FireWall by CleanTalk which work out of the box to protect your forms against spam.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Jade,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Since ticking the anti-spam protection option, the situation seems to have got a lot better. Only time will tell, but I′ve noticed a massive reduction in spam since ticking that option. I wish I had ticked the box earlier!

I will see how it goes and hopefully no longer have a problem, but will install one of the suggested plugins if anything changes.

    Thanks for your help,
    Adam

    Hello @adamno1,

Glad to hear that! I’m going to go ahead and close this thread for now. But if you’d like us to assist further, please feel welcome to continue the conversation (please just see my post above).

    Thank you.

    Hi Jade,

    Thanks for your message.

The honeypot combined with the anti-spam has been working well.

The only follow-up question I have is about the email summary report. For ages I′ve just been ignoring the email report, as the number of actual contact entries received has always been a lot less than the number stated on the report. This week I′ve in fact received only one or two, but the report said I received many. (On a related note, I′ve just tested the contact form and it seems to be working).

I imagine that the email summary report includes all messages “submitted”, including spam ones which are blocked by your spam filter and my server and caught by the “Honeypot”? (Before I clicked the “Enable Anti-Spam Protection” I used to receive loads of spam messages. The spam now has stopped, having recently enabled the “Anti-Spam Protection, but I wanted to check how the figure is calculated? The figure on the report has not really changed). Maybe I should just disable the email notifications, as this week I′ve only physically received one or two messages, but the report says many more?

Thanks for your help in advance.
