• Hi,

I’ve been running a website https://www.charlottesvveb.com for a couple of years now.

Recently my advertising provider made a huge number of links to my site which unexpectedly increased the traffic over a 3 day period. I previously used caching plugins (wp super cache and WTC3) but had issues with them last year so I took them off until I could learn how to use them properly.

When I encountered the increased traffic I found it difficult to load the homepage (although other pages did seem to load, not necessarily fully but in better shape than the homepage) and I could not access CMS. I thought that a few weeks later, now traffic has died down again, that the problem could be resolved. But I still can’t access CMS and the homepage only partially loads. I’m concerned there is another issue, perhaps a hack, but I’m not a HTML expert and so would find it hard to spot. Although a lot of people on the forum have had similar issues for various reasons, I’ve no idea which reason is most similar to mine.

I’ve contacted Network Solutions (my host) but not heard back yet. I really want to update the theme as it always loaded so slowly anyway. Plus I really want to post more articles and update plugins. I particularly want to get a caching plugin finally working on the site.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and help.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

Hi Esmi, thanks for your response. I was hoping to have a bit of an idea before doing anything but perhaps that was wishful thinking.

I’m not a ftp pro and because I can’t access the CMS I’d have to remove plugins completely using my file manager instead. Unless you are/someone is able to provide any steps for resetting the plugins folder by FTP.

Same with theme although I’m not sure, if I just remove my Arras theme and upload Twenty Eleven will that work? Or would I need to activate it in CMS because as I said, I can’t get into that at the moment.

Thanks again for your help. Just a shame I can’t pinpoint what the issue is before starting the mass reupload!

    Hi again Esmi & others

I think I may have found a potential reason why the site isn’t working. I had a look through my Google Analytics and came across someone who has visited three times for several minutes

    Artem Zhirkov Alekseevich

I Googled the name and it came up saying it’s a notorious hacker. Do you think that could be why?

Should I reset file permissions and passwords?

    Any other advice?

    Thanks.

    Hi Esmi,

Yes, I tried using that to check it and it said it was fine but I’ve come across that Russian name in Google Analytics which is apparently quite a notorious hacker so I took a look in my file manager and there is quite a lot of stuff I’m pretty sure shouldn’t be there. Tons of dodgy looking links. Have contacted Network Solutions to see what they say. I think the next step will be going through those links you’ve posted. Thanks for your help Esmi. It’s really appreciated.
