Homepage with multiple pictures as navigation—thought as how-to?

Hey all. In short, I’m looking to create a WP theme which has a similar navigation scheme to this:

Notice you have an ordered grouping of images which redirect to their respective content. Unlike the above website—which is a showing of work—my intended website would change out content on occasion.

I’m familiar with a few different ways that I can do this (namely I was thinking of using a table on a page set to the homepage and just using a:hover to make each image interactive.) But I wanted to see if there were any thoughts as to a better approach. Perhaps even a plugin?

If this is horribly unspecific, please let me know.
