• I have a site that is composed of video posts. On the homepage there are thumbnails of each post. In General Settings I have it set up to display 600 videos which forces users to scroll down to see them all.

It works fine when I’m logged in, but when I log out it won’t scroll. It will display about a page and a half of videos…so the scroll is very minimal. It also has a weird ghost like scroll bar to the right of the active scroll bar. Again this is not there when logged in.

Any advice on how to fix this?

  • What theme are you using? Where did you download it from?

The only one I see is wordpress-boilerplate.

I didn’t download it. It was already there when I took over. It’s a custom site.

Upload a copy of the Twenty Fourteen theme and see if you can replicate the issue in that theme.

I can’t mess up the theme. I have to leave it as is.

No one said anything about amending your current theme.

how am i supposed to test another theme without switching it over? i don’t feel comfortable doing that.

i was thinking it’s a common problem but can’t find it in other searches.

Why? There is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just basic troubleshooting – a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Your theme & plugin settings are saved in your database and should be retained for future use.

is there any other way to find out what’s causing it. This theme has been in place for years and haven’t had trouble with it before.

    khamilton:

I assume the situation is that you don’t have a development environment where you conduct tests like those recommended earlier?

So, you say “[t]his theme has been in place for years and haven’t had trouble with it before”, so, what has changed? It is highly unlikely that this problem started without any change…

Are you seeing this in all browsers, or just some? And if some, which ones?

Can you provide a URL where this problem could be seen and tested by others?

What plugins do you have running?

As mentioned by others, the best way to test something like this is on a mirrored installation that will not be visible by the public, even a localhost installation might be helpful. That way you can change themes, disable plugins, and make other changes to the environment to find the issue. Otherwise, you’re really just shooting in the dark…

Right, with this site I can’t afford anything to get messed up. I am fine with switching themes on my other sites, but not on this one.

It probably is a plugin. I didn’t think about that. A few have been added recently. Thanks for offering alternative solutions.

I think we all view the sites we work on as important, and wouldn’t want to mess around with them when they’re live. Which is why we make local installations. I would recommend having a look through this search and setting up a copy of any site you work on as a local copy, so you can play, tweak, and develop, without fear of breaking things, then once you have it “all figured out”, you can copy that to live:
