Good afternoon, I hope someone can help me.

When some users load the homepage of our website, they don’t get the full homepage, but a minimal version which does not show any of the layout, the homepage photo or anything really. There is a link “view full site”, and sometimes it loads the full site, and sometimes not.

This started to happen about a month or so ago, and I do not know why. I also do not know how to turn it off. Also, not all users get this page, some go straight to the desktop or mobile version.

What can I do to ensure that anyone who visits our website get the full mobile or desktop version, and not this “skinny” version?

    Regards,
    Esther

  • Hi Esther,

I see this thread is marked as resolved. Did you manage to figure this out?

It sounds like you had the Jetpack mobile theme active, but I can confirm that’s no longer active on your site – that theme is scheduled for retirement very soon in any case.

Please do let us know if you still need any help with this.

Hi, yes, I believe it is resolved.
I was searching for what the problem could be, and also posted here in the forum, but continued to search further, reading loads of help files and forum threads. In one of them I found the tip to deactivate the jetpack mobile theme, and it seemed that that was indeed the problem. It seems like the jetpack theme overrode the dara theme.
    Thank you for checking in.

It seems like the jetpack theme overrode the dara theme.

That is correct. If the Jetpack mobile theme is active on a site, that’s what will show to anyone viewing your site on a mobile device, regardless of whether or not your theme itself is mobile-friendly. So that’s how the Jetpack mobile theme is designed to work.

That theme was created back when most themes weren’t responsive yet, as a way to allow site owners to have a mobile-friendly version of their site without having to change to another theme or modify their existing theme. As such, it is not designed to detect whether or not the theme active on your site is responsive or not, as there weren’t any responsive themes to check for at the time.

As any theme designed according to current best practices these days are not only responsive, but designed as mobile-first, something like the Jetpack mobile theme is no longer needed. That’s why this feature will be removed from Jetpack soon in a future update.
