• I changed the home page of my site https://www.rogerperkin.co.uk 5 days ago and it is still showing the old page – if I am logged into WordPress I see the new page

So this is a caching problem

I deleted the plugin and all traces from ftp

    Cache folder and config

    However old page still shows

If i look at the page source of home page it says served by w3 total cache at the bottom 18-9-2015

    How can I clear this?

Have re-installed cleared cache deleted htaccess

But the old page won’t go

Any help much appreciated as this is driving me crazy

Your expiry has been set too long (1 month).

In your Browser Cache, under HTML/XML, choose a low value such as 3600.

If you want fresh pages for every visit, also choose the last option.

Apart from that I don’t understand your comment well, but the above should help improve.

Thanks for the info I think I am getting closer to the solution

So you saying in W3 under browser cache set a low value and update.

Out of interest where do you see the expires header 1 month.

    Using Chrome DevTools

    https://developer.chrome.com/devtools

(It’s possible you may have set a high expiry originally but W3TC overrides it to 1 month in that case).

Ok I have made those changes to the plugin and cleared the cache.

Still no difference, I am coming close to re-installing site but it does seem like overkill to solve this annoying issue.

Do you see any change in the expires header now?

I am still confused as to the expires header, as my understanding is that this is a browser setting, so if you had not been to my site before you would be pulling down a new version.

How was this working before as if I made a change to the homepage it appeared instantly – could this be a theme bug? I have also changed them upgrade etc.

Yeah I still see 1 month.

There are a few things about Varnish cache … Maybe that’s where the problem is in that case … but I don’t have any knowledge to help you (if that’s causing some issue here).

Yes old visitors’ browsers will load from their cache but I also loaded it without cache (DevTools allows that) and checked. Still 1 month.

Don’t think it’s theme bug or anything. Just something about caches.

This is W3 Total cache – not sure what Varnish cache is?

If I deleted my entire wordpress install and restored the site would this fix the problem?

    Ramanan

    (@superpoincare)

Ignore my comment on Varnish. I thought I saw it in your headers but no longer see it.

It’s possible that if you reinstall WordPress, your problems can go but it’s also possible it might not.

Try this: go to your backend and delete the subfolder named cache in the folder wp-content.

    Check if it works.

I have deleted the cache folder and the config folder and deleted the plugin.

I have since managed to get my .htaccess updated to reflect expires time of 3600 seconds but – still not made any difference..

    Ramanan

    (@superpoincare)

    Sorry it didn’t help.

Do you have your cache set to “no cache” in Browser settings?

    I have just done that,

I am thinking now this is a hosting issue as I have previously deleted the plugin, cache folder and config folder

Will see if the no cache makes any difference

    Thread Starter rnperki

    (@rnperki)

I have now narrowed the problem down to something in my database, I have deleted my entire site and re-installed a clean wordpress.

The new home page is blank – no cached page. Once I point back to my database the old home page comes back –

Not sure where this is being saved now but not a W3 Total Cache issue

    Ramanan

    (@superpoincare)

Oh. I now see your background has changed from blue to white. So there is some change at least.

    Thread Starter rnperki

    (@rnperki)

No but that is also an old cached page

So the deal is I delete the entire site and re-install wordpress and the stuck home page goes away.

I then re-point my site to the database and the stuck page comes back, so I think I need to be looking into the database for any reference to W3 and remove

It is referencing this style sheet which was also deleted on saturday?

    https://www.rogerperkin.co.uk/wp-content/themes/epik/style.css?ver=2.2.2

    Ramanan

    (@superpoincare)

I see the reference to this sheet.

    https://www.rogerperkin.co.uk/wp-content/themes/executive-pro/style.css?ver=3.0.0

Btw, W3TC also has a database cache. Is it on for you? You could turn it off.
