• Fairly new wordpress user here

I set up 3 sites on wordpress

All sites are separate installs / separate databases.
I’m not using multisite and prefer not to

2 sites installed and work fine
the 3rd site installed mostly fine, but when you navigate to the site the home page shows: Oops! That page can’t be found.

https://www.saxpistols.com is the site I’m having trouble with.
I’m VERY early in the build process, no content added because I’m getting the 404 error and want to fix that before spending time on content

When you go to the site, the site menu is there and you can navigate to the other pages, but having a landing page with an error 404 message is a non -starter for me!

    I’ve tried:
    Settings -> Permalinks -> Save
I’ve manually edited/reloaded the htaccess file
The home page is set to static (although, I have the same issue whether it’s static or not)

I have noticed that when you type in sax.pistols.com, that the page it lands on says: https://saxpistols.com/index.html

On my other sites, when it lands on the home page, the /index.html tag is not there

I’m at a loss of what to do.

  • Hi @floodstage,

Under WordPress Admin -> Settings -> Reading have you selected a default home page that you would like to display to visitors?

Looks like you solved it! I see your list of blog posts.

    This is weird.

    If I type in
    https://www.saxpistols.com
then it comes up fine (and says something about the link being insecure)

    If I type in
    saxpistols.com
    (without the www.)
then it comes up with the opps page cannot be found

Under settings->general, what do you have for the site’s URL?

    Thread Starter floodstage

    (@floodstage)

    https://saxpistols.com

    Should it be https ?

    (@floodstage)

I changed it to https, re-did the settings->permalinks->save, then I cleared my cookies, and tried again and it seems to be working.

I’m assuming adding the “s” in https did something?

    Does that make sense?

Knowing what fixed it is important to me.

Nope, typed saxpistols.com in the google search and got the oops message again.

I don’t know what is going on

    (@floodstage)

whenever I get the oops message it says

    https://saxpistols.com/index.html

    in the search window.

When ever it comes up right, there is no

    /index.html tag

My wife is on MS Edge browser and it works.

    I’m on Firefox

It may well be local caching in your browser.

Would you please open up a Private Window in Firefox and try visiting the site again. This will ensure you are receiving a fresh copy of the site and your browser is not retaining any cached data.

Do you see the /index.html result in a new Private Window session?

I was getting the message on my desktop and android phone, but we didn’t get it on iPads , another laptop and another phone.

I cleared the cookies again, but this time saw the “for today” or “all” and cleared them all. Had to do the same thing with the phone.

Both see the site now if you type anything into the browser bar.

If you search on google, and click on the link it gets the oops message, but I thing that’s googles search engine having memory. Not sure how to clear that, but it’s not a WordPress question at this point.

Thank you to everyone who chimed in.
I spent 2 days working on this before posting.
less that 30 min after posting, I got enough hints to fix it.
    And THAT is awesome.
    Have a great weekend all!

    Hey @floodstage,

It’s great that you were able to get this solved.

You might consider marking this support request as resolved?

    Thanks!

I have spent a day or two with it since, and it’s working reliably now.

    Making as solved
