This is not a site I did, but a friend’s site. She says she went to add a page yesterday, and that page started showing as the home page, rather than the content that was previously on the home page.

I deleted the page she had created (there wasn’t any content on it yet), and checked her settings to see what she had her home page to display. It should be displaying a particular page, but it won’t change – no matter what change I make in the Settings, whether to display the latest blog posts or a page, it still redirects to this page that doesn’t exist.

Any thoughts? It’s a template problem, I suspect, because when I switch to 2010, it works.

  • Any plugins of interest? (specifically, the redirection plugin)

    What are the reading settings?

They are using the redirection plugin, but nothing of concern there. Old html pages pointing to their proper pages, and there are only 5 of them.

The reading settings now are set to the home page>What Makes Us Different? (a page) and Posts>Blog (a page).

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

It’s probably the redirection plugin – I’ve had that problem before… let me find where that setting is…

@esmi – I think it IS theme specific – switching to 2010 allow the home page settings to be changed – but looking at the home page template, I don’t see anything crazy. The theme uses a home page template that can be chosen from the templates in the page editor (did that make sense? I feel like that sentence goes in circles!)

You can check for redirects you may not know about by picking Modified Posts in the redirection group (https://screencast.com/t/jwPqxZCV).

You could also deactivate the redirection plugin and see if that solves the issue.

I would not think it would be a theme thing, unless the theme does some really strange things with redirects. The homepage URI / is giving a 301 Moved Permanently redirect code:

    HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently

    Server: Apache mod_fcgid/2.3.6 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635

Jacob wins again. The Redirection plugin is messing it up.. but why when it was working fine earlier this week? She SAYS she didn’t change anything. huh. well, guess i’ll figure it out!

It’s something to do with changing either the page permalinks or deleting pages that used to be the homepage or something like that… did you just have to delete some redirects?

    (@ameeker)

Yeah – I just deleted the one redirect. It had /home redirecting to /.

The redirection plugin may not be compatible with the current version of WordPress.

It should be (it says it is up to 3.1.2), and I’ve had that problem for a while.

I think it comes from the plugin trying to be “smart” in creating redirects for changed posts which is great for a live site, but in development when URIs and settings change often it doesn’t work well.
