home page customization

Hi I would like to know how i can add some custom text to the home page i.e. a basic description of my business. i would also like to know how i can change/remove some of the featured image links and gravel content windows from the home page as well. also i would like to know how i can remove the mail and gmail buttons from the header, thank you.
