hit a snag at the start

    “Error establishing a database connection”

    hosting information:
    Linux 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp (SMP)

    PHP 4.1.20
    Server: Localhost via UNIX socket

    wordpress 2.2.2 (downloaded hours ago)

    I uploaded the .zip to the server and unpacked it there.
    created the sql database applied a user with full permissions.

    I tried the wp-admin/install.php and got the error
    I looked at the file permissions and I think it’s good.

    what else can I do?
