Highly-customizable Edit window layout

Here’s something I’d like to see…

I’d like an Edit window layout that only displays the fields I use and shows them in a size and position that reflects my workflow.

The default WP edit screen is pretty good — infinitely better than MT’s — but could still use some tweaks. For example, I’ve never understood why the Title field is so ridiculously small, considering that there’s lots of unused space adjacent to it. I modified edit-form-advanced.php to make it 100px wide and found that was an improvement.

But although I spend many hours a day using the Edit layout, I’m not a programmer and there are lots of other changes I’d like. I’ll bet there are many WP users who spend lots of time scrolling around to use the few fields that are critical for them. The choice of Simple and Advanced layouts is helpful, but (needless to say), the one thing I need for almost every post is timestamping, and that’s not available in the Simple layout. These days, I’m posting 70-85 items a day and the less-than-optimal layout I’m working with is a constant irritation.

So…how about customizing tool (plugin? standalone script?) that would let non-technically-savvy users mix and match to create the Edit layout of their dreams?
