high number of email notifications

Same here. I set the maximum to 1 per hour (I wish there was a “per day” drop down menu in there!) but I still get over 24 per day.

And also I unchecked many options for alerting, but alerts still come for failed logins and blocked addresses (most repeated alerts are exactly for this type of problem).

I hope this reflects Amy’s problems too.

I am experiencing the same flood of emails. Do these bot attacks typically end over a period of time? My login has been under attack for over 24 hours now. Using strong passwords and my core is current and my plugins are current (love the feature in this plugin that notifies me about plugin updates) but I have to admit it’s got me a little concerned how many login attempts have happend. Is the technical term for this a DDoS?

Any advise or direction to my questions is appreciated.

It’s not a DDoS. DDoS is designed to knock your site offline. This is just a bot login attack.

I don’t have email alerts turned on for failed logins due to how frequently this happens. Instead of a username like “admin” I have usernames like “admin325” that aren’t easily found. I periodically scan the Blocked IPs to see what usernames the bots are trying. I also have the Failed Login lockout set for 30 days.

Attacks can happen for any amount of time. It’s really up to the people lunching a bot attack trying to login. Choosing an admin username without admin in it is always a good option in my opinion.

As to the suggestion, I’ll make sure Mark sees it. I think one a day for failed logins would be nice some times. Of course, that doesn’t help you see when an attack starts up, unless you are watching the live traffic view.

So, to answer the original question, it probably is ‘normal’ and not a plugin problem. Hopefully it will be over soon. If you really want to see something interesting, head over to wordfence.com and watch just soem of the attacks happen in real time, showing where they come from and are going to. It’s really interesting, especially during times when a massive attack is launched.
