    Hej Anders,

First of all: Thank you so much for this great theme, it is amazing!

However, I recently noticed an issue in the Core Web Vitals of Google Search Console. It says that for nearly all posts on my website, the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is to large (> 2.5 s) in the mobile version. I checked it with an online tool (https://www.dunplab.it/web-vitals-tester), and yes, while the values are okay for the desktop version (1.7 s), the mobile version is significantly slower (5.7 s). According to Google, the problem first occurred on 1 September. So I suspect that the problem might have to do with the latest update of Eksell to version 1.7.1, which was issued the day before.

I would be very happy if you have any ideas on how to fix the problem.

    Best regards,

    Sebastian

    An addition:

I tested one random post of the demo page (https://andersnoren.se/themes/eksell/painting-on-light-ground/) to make sure that it has not to do with my server or some plugins.

    The same result: desktop 0.8 s, mobile 3.6 s

    Hi @sebwilken,

    Glad you like it!

Version 1.7.1 only contains a minor style change (3 new lines of CSS) and a minor markup change to the header, so I doubt it had much impact on performance.

I can’t speak to your own site, but the page you tested on the Eksell demo site is pretty image heavy, and the demo site doesn’t use any image optimization plugins, so those images do a lot to drag down the LCP score. Using a service like Cloudflare can do a lot to improve those values, especially with the WordPress Automatic Platform Optimization plan active.

That said, Eksell isn’t the most lightweight WordPress theme out there – it includes quite a lot of CSS and JavaScript. There’s not much you can do to the theme itself to improve its performance, other than to dequeue the CSS variables ponyfill if you don’t need Internet Explorer 11 support.

    Hej @anlino,

Thank you very much for the quick reply!

I see, then it was maybe just a coincidence that the problems started about a week ago. But still I’m wondering why the difference between desktop and mobile is that big. Consistently, I get 3-4 times slower performance for the mobile version in LCP tests. It also seems that Google stopped indexing new posts of my blog because they’re considered non-optimized for mobile devices…

    Best regards,

    Sebastian

@sebwilken No problem! I believe that Google simulates using a lower bandwidth on mobile (3G or 4G, not sure) compared to the desktop tests, resulting in the speeds being lower on mobile.
