• Hello,

Over the last few months, out of nowhere, with no new themes/plugins installed I have noticed my website keeps crashing/freezing.

Once looking on the cPANEL i noticed that the CPU Usage is regularly maxing out at 100% while the Disk Usage is also quite high.

I am no expert when it comes to web design but I believe I know the basics. So I have done my research and followed the usual things such as installing the Fast Velocity Minify plugin.

I followed everything on this website also: https://www.ecenica.com/support/answer/fix-high-cpu-load-wordpress/

All plugins that my website don’t need, I have disabled and deleted while all current ones are up to date.

I have spoken with my host, who has said they believe they have done everything they can do there end (they have been very helpful) and have never seen anything like this.

The rest of my website (forum and emails) run smoothly most of the time. It seems to be something within WordPress that is causing the problems.

Any help would be much appreciated

All these actions you’ve taken have an underlying assumption… which you may not even have thought of. You’re assuming it’s something internal that’s causing the high CPU usage, hence your actions.

But the cause could be purely external: eg excessive search engine bot crawling, excessive malicious bot requests, etc.

Have you analysed your web server’s access logs and confidently ruled out any external causes?

It’s dangerous to be working from assumptions.

I’ll advise you to get help to examine your server’s logs: webserver, database, applications, etc — and get to the bottom of what script is really causing your CPU usage to rise through the roof.

If you’re on shared hosting, you can ask for help from your host: at the very least, they should be able to provide you with the logs (even if they’re won’t analyse them for you).

From there, you can also examine your access logs to find out if some bot is hitting this script, hence the high CPU usage.

All I’m saying is… you need to analyse your server’s logs to know exactly what’s causing the high CPU usage and why that may be happening.

And just a tip: consider using an external WAF and/or CDN like the free Cloudflare service. This will block off malicious requests and also take some load off the server — both of which can get your CPU usage down.

    Good luck!
