Hiding subcategories, but only the actual category text (not content)

Hey! I’m looking for an easy way to hide subcategories from the frontpage of my WP install. Right now they all show, and it looks messy.
Ex. “News -> Movies / Technology / Games” will show four categories, the three last being the subs and news being the main one. I want to only show the category text for “News” and “hide” the other three, but still show the content on the frontpage.
Any help much appreciated. ??

The problem is that in the boxes below the main splash slider, I’ve removed the categories all together from showing up. In the splash they show up, all of the ones that are used in the post.
I want those red/pink categories to show up in the news boxes below the main splash, but only the main category that is used. Ex. instead of showing “News” and the subcat “Games”. I want it to only show “News” not “Games”. Basically hide the subcategories from the frontpage, but keep them once you click the post.
