Hiding recent posts from guests by category

  • I am new to WordPress and am trying to find a way to filter the recent posts widget by post category and role.

    Basically I have a ‘News’ and a ‘Member News’ category. I want everything displaying to logged in users but only ‘News’ displaying to guests.

    I have found plug-ins which allow the content to be blocked, but that is not a very good user experience and instead I don’t want the post to show up at all, either in recent posts or archive.

    Is there a way to do this?

  • @cihomewood – the included widget for recent posts is not filterable in the way you are asking. If you have some knowledge of PHP, you can duplicate the widget into your custom theme or customized child theme and then edit the queries yourself. There are also several plugins which have widgets to display recent posts filtered by category.
