Since I live in Europe, I am looking for a GDPR-compliant way to prevent signup-spam. I would prefer not to use captchas because they send user data to 3rd party servers.

In that regard, I have a few questions:

    1) In your plugin, can I disable reCaptcha?
    2) How would you rate the efficiency of email confirmations without the captcha? Is it alone enough to get rid of most of the fake signups?
    3) Does your plugin store any cookies or track user information?

#2. reCaptcha is protecting spam submission forms, its recommended if you bother of spamming.
#3, our plugin doesn’t store any cookies, it just generates a verification key and sends through a link on verification mail.

Hope you get answered your questions.

Thank you for your answer. ReCaptcha is problematic in terms of GDPR because it creates a connection to Google servers. As a European, I have to take that seriously.
Would you say that email confirmations are still effective even without captchas?
In other words: Do bots know how to confirm their email addresses?

It’s really up to your choice to block spammer with a different filter on access to your site, ReCaptcha is globally used to protect spammer, that’s why we added on our plugin to add extra security to the pass verification process, as much as restrict the verification process spammer will lose interest on your site.

if you don’t use ReCaptcha on your site is fine, our email verification will work fine without ReCaptcha.

    Hope you understand my point.

I understand your point. I am just wondering if bots nowadays are able to verify their email addresses. I would guess no.
