    Hello All –

I am very new to WordPress and I want to know the following: I am just about to purchase a theme (https://www.revolutiontheme.com/) and then install WordPress on my website’s server. How can I develop the wordpress site, hidden from the rest of the world, while having my ‘old’ current site still visible (not a wordpress site)? Also, once the new WordPress site is done, how do I make it show up under the root directory and be visible to the world at large.

I searched and found several topics on moving WordPress to other directories, but I just wanted to make sure that the above is possible and that I don’t make a mess of things.

    Cheers!

  • Well if your current site is all *.htm or *.html pages you can put WP in the root; people going to your site will still see the HTML pages first unless they directly type index.php.

It is prolly best to set up maybe a subdomain (that’s how I prefer to do things like that) and keep it around so you can *always* be experimenting with cutting edge stuff, new plugins, newer versions of WP before unleashing them on your live site. So if you’ve found the information about moving it, I’d go ahead and set up a subdomain (maybe sandbox.yourdomain.com) and make that your WP development site. Good luck! ??

    Thank you for your response.

Once I want to go live, how hard is it to move the content to the root directory, or direct people to the sub folder? Do you typically back up the wordpress directories prior to doing things like this? (I did find the instructions, but I don’t want to create any unnecessary ‘issues’)

    Thank you again!

Now that you still have a choice, why don’t you just creat a protected folder in your control panel and install WP in it. If the protection works with htaccess (I don’t know, I never tried), you can just delete it and the folder becomes public.

There are also maintanance plugins available.
