Hide default POI markers

Is there a way to hide the default POI markers on Google Maps via your plugin?
I’m placing a marker down in quite a crowded area, and it’s hard to see what it is I’m pin-pointing because of all the POIs that are being marked by default.

In the past when I have played around with embedding Google Maps into a webpage, I’ve passed the following arguments:

styles : [{
    'featureType': 'poi',
    'stylers': [{ 'visibility' : 'off' }]
}],
